Quick, off the cuff and only audio in the YT link. But it’s from the heart and how I feel these days. I’ve laid pretty low in posting, and intend to keep it that way. For precisely the reasons I talk about in the blog.

Unity. Coming together.

Hopes In Talking Together

“What are your best hopes from our talking together today?”

That is the foundational hallmark question of a solution focused conversation with a client. It focuses the attention on the solution. And the hopes. And the working together between the client and the therapist or coach.

I was thinking about that question in light of all of the things that have been going on in our world over the last several months. And what I kept thinking about was, “what are my best hopes from our talking together?” I was thinking about hopes. Thinking about talking. Thinking about together.

What do each of those words actually mean in terms of what we are witnessing in our global world these days?

My hopes? My hopes are that we can be unified. Unified in humanity. Unified in understanding that we are committed to making the world a better place for one another. We’re unified regardless of color, sexual orientation, gender, ethnicity, geographic location, economic status – whatever it happens to be. It actually doesn’t matter. Because in the end we’re all human. We come in this world in the same way and we all leave this world in the same way.

So how is it that we can’t come together between the coming into this world and the leaving of this world? How can we talk and get some essence of hope, in unity from our conversations with one another?

I’m not going to get into what’s right or what’s wrong. What I believe. The news media – is it truthful or is it not? We all have our own opinions and we actually have the freedom to have those opinions, in most cases. And you are entitled to yours as I am entitled to mine. And I respect each and every one of you for your own opinions.

But my hope from our talking together is that we can actually come to a point in this world where we are all as one. Regardless of all of these “differences” that are perceived.

That’s actually all they are – they are perceived differences. Differences that we have built based on our beliefs, our upbringing, our nature versus nurture, or whatever you want to call it. I don’t care. But that’s what has given us the divisiveness. It’s perceived beliefs

So instead I invite you to stop.

Don’t judge.

Don’t have an opinion.

Don’t have a belief.

Step back. Look at the person, the people, the situation that you may have that opinion about – especially if it’s negative or disparaging.

How can you bridge the gap between you and that person or those people? Because if we can’t each take that perspective and bridge that gap, we will become even more divided and never have any hopes of even talking together, much less coming together.

So, take that moment, step back and ask yourself, “what can I do to close the gap between me and that person or those people and become one?”

That is my best hope.
